New City Hall Staffer Helps Inmates Ease Back Into Hartford

When Willie Smith was released from prison in February, he quickly learned that living free didn't mean living easy.

He rolled into Hartford on a bus from Robinson Correctional Institution in Enfield, and was dropped off on Weston Street with little more than the sweatsuit he was wearing.

Smith, 43, had spent a year behind bars after violating his probation from a 2013 drug conviction. Suddenly, he was alone in his hometown with no family to turn to. He was starting from scratch.
